MX5s suffer from rust in areas that cause MOT failures.
MX5 Mk1, Mk2 and Mk2.5 suffer rust attacks to the rear of the sill and wheel arches areas.
It usually shows on the outer sill, the bit you can see. Here's a picture of an MX5 that's in a very poor state. The outer, inner, inner wheelarch and box sections required replacing.
After cutting the rusty outer sill away, almost all of the inner parts where in poor condition.
To enable a good quality weld, all the rusty metal needs to be removed and the surface gound back. This pictures shows the work part way through, the inner wheel arch (back of the sill) is already in position.
New metal is then bent to the correct pattern, the bottom sill edge and the rear corner are made from a single peice of metel then welded into place. Here is the same sill partially complete and almost ready for final finishing.
The box section of this one was replaced too.
The sill undergoes preparation for painting, it is cleaned, primered and then painted. Depending on the car, this may require a number of coats and a clear coat.
Then it'll be returned looking like this.
We'll even do the lower sill black if the car had that. We try and make the car look as original as possible.
Recently, one of our customers cars won a concourse competition at the MX5 Owners Club National Event for Best Original Car. We have rebuilt both sills and wheelarches!
