An All Wheel Drive MK4 MX-5 is possible!
It seems Mazda's Assistant Manager for Drivetrain and Powertrain Development, Tesushi Marutani, who is in-charge of Mazda's All Wheel Drive system development believes there is no reason why the MK4 MX-5 couyldn't be fitted with an AWD system - as longs as the driving dynamics of the car weren't affected and there was a customer demand.
He was being interviewed at the All Wheel Drive Showcase Event in Colorado, when he was asked about a four wheel drive Mazda sportscar.
"In Japan, we have Mazda 2, Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 with AWD as well as the CX-3, CX-5 and new CX-9. For MX-5, this is also possible"
Mr Marutani is an Mazda sportscar fan. He has a MK1 MX-5 and Mk2 RX-7 in his personal collection.
And he does say that other brands use the AWD as a selling point BUT he prefers the MX-5 in Rear Wheel Drive..
