Mazda's MX5 Program Manager, Nobuhiro Yamamoto has hinted in a recent interview that the MK5 MX5 might be a carbon fibre tub.
He says that the car is the right size now, after all it's more like a Mk1 than the previous model, the MK3.
He also said "But in the future, lightweight materials will be very important and will be used in this car.... Carbon Fibre is very expensive, but we have in developmenty affordable carbon fibre, so the MX-5 will be lighter in the future."
"It's a simple concept. The vehicle weight gets lower, there;s a smaller engine, smaller tyres. It's a lightweight sports car."
Well look out everyone! A super lightweight MX5 is on it's way! But we'll probably have to wait until at least 2020 as Mazda haven't replaced any mark of the MX-5 in less that seven years!
